The plastic reason

The Plastic Reason

Barcelona, Spain

Start: 2009. Ongoing

The Plastic Reason intervention consists of pieces that are specifically crafted to be installed in a particular urban setting. They bear the patina and texture of their future location, in order to become part of it.

The chosen sites are empty religious alcoves or pedestals, scattered throughout the city of Barcelona. Some of these alcoves were always empty, other were ransacked during the Tragic Week in 1909.

I intervene by putting busts with no face in these empty spaces, to fill the void with an absent presence that reasserts the existence of a ghostly history built on memory lapse: what is not there, it’s not only because it died or left, it is also not there because we decided to take it away.

The project’s only documentation is a map of Barcelona city made by memory, with all the mistakes that can bring and with a geographic coordinate as concrete starting point. On that map, the places where a piece was installed, whether it’s still there or not, are marked by an x. The map can be downloaded (below) and used to visit the circuit of interventions.

–¿What is this city?

–This city is an invented place.
